I used to think this was a cliche.

Until I experienced it myself as a new copywriter in 2019.

In my 7th month as a copywriter, I moved halfway around the world. My wife Jenny and I flew 16 hours from Vancouver, Canada all the way to to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

At the time I had alrady quit my 9 to 5. But I was only making about $1,000/month as a copywriter. Barely enough to survive (even in Thailand).

So we made a decision to move to the digital nomad capital of the country, in an area called Nimmanhaemin in Chiang Mai.

This was the fancier part of the city. More expensive condos. But we knew this was where the western expats with established businesses lived.

We knew by paying a bit more for rent… we’d force ourselves to brush shoulders with people who were living at a higher level.

We didn’t know what would happen, but we had to give it a shot, even if it meant investing more money into our future.

The next month, after struggling to break past $1,000/month… something switched in my business.

Jenny struck up a conversation with one of our new condo neighbors at the pool one day. Lovely Australian couple. They introduced us to another guy who lived a few blocks towards the mountain (Doi Suthep).

He ran an ecom company doing about $60k/month in revenue.

And he asked what I did.

I said “I write emails for business owners.”

So he asked me to look at his email set up.

So, I gave him a free audit, not thinking much of it. Just wanted to help how I could (even though I stil felt like an imposter).

He liked it. Asked if I could do his emails.

I was shocked.

But…

What left be speechless was when he agreed to my rate.

I closed him for a $7,000 welcome email series project.

$7,000 USD.

Twice as much as my monthly salary at my last 9 to 5.

…for writing just 12 emails.

The project took me 3 weeks. I could have done it in 10 days.

In just a few weeks I went from earning $1,000/month to 7xing my income.

And… he liked my work as the automated emails started brining in solid revenue. So he asked me to do emails for him every month.

Retainer closed.

We worked together for years. And that single client netted me over six figures.

All because I made the decision to put myself in close proximity to business owners.
